Welcome! This document provides an explanation of the PCS k-4 Homeroom Parent Roles and Responsibilities. 5-8 will be updated soon. It is reviewed and updated every year in order to stay current with our school’s and teachers needs. Friends of PCS will hold training sessions to (1) answer more detailed execution questions (2) share best practices and (3) help forecast budgetary needs.
Why Home Room Parents (HRP) and what do they do?
Home Room Parents (aka “HRP”) are a group of caring parent volunteers who act as liaisons between the teachers (via Assistant Heads of Schools or “AHOS”), other parents and Friends (via HRPC or HRP Coordinator). The primary purpose is to support the teachers, enhance the classroom experience for students and assist in strengthening the long term health of PCS by facilitating communication, organizing events and coordinating volunteers. Volunteers - Parents who do not have a flexible schedule to become HRP, but are interested in supporting the class and school in a meaningful way, may participate in events/projects or support selected HRP Functions. Events/projects are activities that do not recur, or occur infrequently, and are often grade specific. Functions are recurring activities such as holiday parties. Hours & time frames vary. During signups, please indicate your general availability, i.e. day/week/month or access to valuable resources.
HRP Roles & Responsibilities
There are 4 main functions within each HRP group and we look to fill four positions (with up to two backup positions and unlimited volunteer positions). Backups function as shadows to the respective HRP. They are the first ones to step up to the position they shadow should there be a need to rotate and/or personnel change. The four main Functions are:
Communications: responsible for communicating all teacher requirements (via AHOS), Friends communications, class funds requirements, reminders, class activity plans, holiday parties, gifts etc.
The role of Communications is key in ensuring all class activities are carried out smoothly, and class parents are well informed of upcoming activities and plans.
Treasury: responsible for class funds collections, budgeting, timely payment, preparation of quasi-financial statements and annual budgets. The Treasurer will also prepare a blurb about the class financial conditions to be included in the class letter. One who has an accounting and/or finance background or one who has a solid working knowledge of operations will be a perfect fit for this role.
Networking & Fundraising: responsible for identifying potential business sponsors or resources that will benefit our students and school. This person will also plan grade level fundraising activities and may prepare signups required for class activities. Looking for people who are comfortable with social and business networking.
Community Builder: responsible for class social and holiday parties. Individuals who are enthusiastic, have creative party ideas, and are comfortable at hosting parties will be perfect for this role. This individual will also be working with other HRPs to carry out creative grade-level fundraising activities.
K-4 HRP Functions (2025-2026)
Each grade level celebrates 4 class parties throughout the school year: Halloween, Winter, Valentine’s Day and End of the Year. Parties are scheduled with the teacher directly, and typically fall within the last few days of school before the upcoming break. Volunteers are needed to plan and push out sign-ups, lead the planned activities and work the food station (day of).
